SAI SAG Centre, Sundargarh lifted the Nalco Cup, defeating Rourkela Steel Plant 2-1 in the final of the 16th Odisha State Hockey Championship at Barabati Stadium, Cuttack today. It was a creditable achievement for the SAI team considering the fact that they participated in the championship for the first time.
Earlier, defending champions East Coast Railway crashed out in the semifinals, while last year’s runners-up Khurda were eliminated in the quarterfinals. The tournament was inaugurated by Odisha Finance & Excise Minister Sashi Bhusan Behera on April 6.
State Health & Family Welfare Minister Pratap Jena joined the closing ceremony as chief guest and handed over the trophy. NALCO Director Basant Kumar Thakur, Hockey Odisha president Justice (Retd) A S Naidu, secretary Pratap Satpathy and Odisha Athletic Association secretary Asirbad Behera were present on the occasion.
